OK, I'm at work on the 21F and I've NEVER, after all these years, felt such a sway...it's been going on for a few minutes and is REALLY freaking me out. My hands are kinda shaking. The walls are making squeaking noises. I feel a bit queasy. The whole office is going home now so me too. The emergency announcement in the building just announced the building is OK. The earthquake was a biggie in the Tohoku region and was a 4 in Tokyo. Can't imagine what a 6 would be like.

That was the longest lasting tremour since my arrival in Tokyo (October 2000)!
Damn!! Maybe I should go home to London!
Posted by: Eddie at May 26, 2003 06:45 PMMy four story mansion was shaking so hard the dishes were rattling. I would hate to have been in a skyscraper!!
Posted by: mark at May 26, 2003 08:46 PMJust called my in-laws in Matsudo-shi, Chiba. They are fine although also freaked. It was the strongest and lasted the longest they can remember.
Take care ! Prepare that emergency kit tonight.
Posted by: ジョージ at May 26, 2003 08:55 PMDid it really last over a minute? I've only felt one as long as ~15 seconds.
Just say 'No' to earthquakes!
Posted by: Dav at May 27, 2003 02:34 AMThe news said it lasted for 1min 30secs.
In Tokyo, I guess it lasted...... like..... 1min (???)
This is a bit scary, considering I've applied to Tohoku University in Sendai for a study abroad program starting in October... I hope there aren't any big quakes while I'm there!
Posted by: Jeff H at May 27, 2003 02:14 PMSorry to hear that... I hope you're ok now.
I wish I could find something clever to say to make you feel better... I've never experienced an earthquake so I can't even start to imagine how frightening it might be.
Take care of yourself.
Saw the pictures on the BBC news. Looked awful. My wife and I were in Tokyo in 1999. Really hope that the "big" one never comes, we loved the people and the place. Good luck.
Posted by: tom at May 28, 2003 04:09 PMDear Mie San,
It wasn`t that bad, on the ground
floor in Nerima-ku, but the t.v. showed the
stores in Sendai, had a lot of things knocked
on the floor.
I wouldn`t want to be in your office
if we get a #6 here,ne!
GANBATTE!
