The Protest

EZ Movie file (.amc)

Around 6:00 pm, I met Cameo at Shibuya and found a lot more protesters. The meeting spot was Hachiko (the famous dog) so it was hard to tell who was there for protesting and who was there to meet their date. A good gimmick on the part of the protest organizers to inspire people to join. Itís like having a protest on a train station platform (BTW, I read that in Osaka, some protesters rode the subways to display their signs). After some speeches, we all (I have no idea how many) walked towards Miyashita Park. There, people came and came and came. People played music, distributed flyers, and began talking to each other. The more we hung around, the more excited I got. This was a real protest!

The movies show the main organizers making some more speeches, the third one is of a group who wore Bush face masks and did a song/dance ridiculing him to dust, and the final movie shows us all walking around right smack in the middle of Shibuya. To see the faces of young teenagers who were busy shopping or drinking Starbuckís coffee, and to (hopefully) make the drivers of the ridiculously huge SUVís at least a bit uncomfortable, and to receive waves from grandmaís in the public buses stuck in the middle of the march, was so worth it. I came away from the whole event high and happy...relatively speaking that is. My heart was heavy to have seen several people who left that night for Iraq to be human shields...

Hey Mie,

How about posting your movies as quicktime so that us lowly mac users can see them too? :-)

Unfortunately her cellphone takes the movies in this weird proprietary .amc format. I'm not aware of any way to convert them to anything else, nor of any .amc players for other operating systems. If anyone ever runs across either of those things please let Mie or I know...

Bummer. I've been told anyway that with the quality of the movies, I should take more photos than movies, so I keep that in mind. But with the protests, I really wanted to catch the raucous that pics couldn't capture.

Why can't companies agree to use the same format? Really, are they just trying to piss us off?

Shaun, I just ran across some good quality quicktime movies of the Tokyo march on joi ito's site: Anti-war parade in Shibuya.

Actually, I took a lot of videos, but my site is down at the moment. As soon as that is rectified, I'll post my pictures and videos... (although, by that time, the interest will have subsided.. ah well.)

Oops, the HTML got stripped out of that post about Joi Ito's site, here it is: http://joi.ito.com/archives/2003/02/16/movies_from_the_antiwar_parade_in_shibuya.html

This may be useless information but if you go to this website and download the ezmovie player, which is the very FIRST red DOWNLOAD box, and as long as your computer can support the Japanese language, you should be in business! This is the site address: http://www.au.kddi.com/ezfactory/tec/spec/ezmovie_lite.html It worked for me so hopefully it will work for you, too!! Good luck! =) cory
