New gardening technique

On the way to my parents' house, my mom spotted a crazy looking garden. Plastic shopping baskets perched on top of the poles supporting various plants. My only explanation is that it's one way to make sure the ubiquitous crows don't sit on the poles, making them fall over and destroying the plants. But it sure isn't a very aesthetic approach.
