Baby!

Finally meeting up w/ Linda from high school. She's been super busy caring for Sean...He is already 5 months! I threw a small baby shower for her but it feels like it was only last month.Wow.Linda is half like I am. Her husband Leo is too. So is he 'fully half' as Linda says? But Sean looks very Japanese, no? It so interesting how these combinations work.

Half? You look whole to me.

Seriously, don't you think "double" is more accurate than "half"? Linguistically and culturally native in two systems. It's plus (mostly), but half sounds kind of incomplete.

(What I really mean is, you all look so cute together.)

I've heard the 'double' vs. 'half' debate and although I don't necessarily like 'half', I don't agree with 'double' either - at least for me. I could go on and on about this, but I've mulled over this for the past, like 20 years, and I have noticed that I am not native in either system. I am different (or treated differently) and feel somewhat removed from both cultures. I think I'll always feel a bit on the outside and will have gaps in my knowledge about little things that peole take for granted.

However, I am also realizing that we ALL struggle in finding our own place. With such immense generational differences, globalization, internet, and travel opportunties, no matter where we come from, we have so many choices in how to live, what to believe in, who to associate with, what cultural baggage to lug around. It's all a choice. I look forward to the time when people will stop peering into my face and ask 'what are you?' because everyone will be so mixed that it just won't matter anymore. In the meantime, I try to blur as much as I can people's preconceptions.
